“Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars… Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” ~ Martin Luther King Jr.
Losing your cool when life throws you a curve ball will make an already difficult moment even more difficult.
- When something sets you off, and every fiber of your being wants to explode…keep it together.
- When your best friend betrays you, feel the anger and…keep it together.
- When your lover cheats on you, and all you want to do is rage, fall apart, or leave…keep it together.
When responding to hurt, violence, or upset, feel the anger – and – keep your head. Feel the pain, acknowledge the rage burning inside, and–STAY CALM. What you say or do in the heat of the moment can impact your life for years to come.
The more hurtful the situation, the more critical it is to get grounded and think clearly. Take space, breathe, get support, and know that the intensity of emotions will pass with a little distance. Make no significant decisions in the moment. Don’t say anything you’re likely to regret later. And don’t fool yourself into thinking that the poor behavior of others is a green light for your own.
Challenge: During those most hurtful times, remember, KIT: Keep it Together. Take a breath, stay calm, and keep it together. Trust yourself to get through the storm without creating one yourself. Stay calm, slow things down, and think before you act. Your calm in the storm will help create steady waters–in your relationships and throughout your life.
